Outside Hook 1

  • Session starts in the Skill squares as soon as the players arrive

1. Unopposed 15 mins

Allow the players free roam of the grid practising the outside hook at they’re pleasure letting them figure it out for themselves without being spoon fed.Coach, ghost coaches around the grid making sure each player is comfortable with the skill enough to move on to the next stage.

Sub Routine of skill

  1. Standing foot on the toes and bend the leg
  2. Used foot reaches forward and curls outside of foot around the back of the ball
  3. Hook the ball behind in the opposite direction
  4. turn hips with the turn to keep control
  5. Explode with pace (Ronaldo) 

2. Static Opposition 15 mins

Place Cones around the grid at random.Players dribble the ball around the grid approaching each cone and performing an outside hook at each cone using the cone as a reference to hook the ball behind.This is a good opportunity to implement the Messi and Ronaldo runs also so anytime the coach shouts Messi or Ronaldo the players will perform this dribbling technique.

  • Can the players then choose for themselves when the best time to perform a Messi technique ?
  • Can the players then choose for themselves when the best time to perform a Ronaldo technique ?
  • How many cones can they Outside Hook around?
  • Time limits
  • Points for completed
  • Switch feet
  • Can they perform a double Hook? (one on the left into one on the right)
  • Can they add Inside hooks also ?

3. Opposed 15 mins

Players are put into pairs, one person in front of the other the front player starts with the ball and sets off dribbling, the player at the back is to try to keep up with his movements anywhere inside the grid although he can use the cones on the outside of the grid also.Now give both players a ball and switch who leads.The player in front must use outside hooks to change direction and try to get away from the follower.When the coach shouts Hook they break from theyre partners and make another pair with someone new and performing a hook against each other before moving back to their original partners.

  • How close can the player stay behind the partner
  • How many Outside Hooks can they do?
  • Add Points
  • Use both feet 

4. Conditioned Skill Related Game

Players are split into small teams 3v3 or 4v4 depending on how many participants you have.The emphasis is to score goals by using the outside hook.Skill zones are set up and the teams must complete two hooks in order to score a goal.Encourage the players to burst into space after using the skill and look for the sensible time in order to do so.When a player makes a mistake “freeze the play and explain what they could have done to achieve success in that phase of play.

5. Final Match – Skill Match 30 mins (finish at around 27 mins so that cone pick up finishes on time for parents arrival)

  • Normal 1 point for a goal
  • 5 points for an Inside Hook anywhere on the field
  • 5 points for an Outside Hook anywhere on the field
  • 10 points for beating an opponent with an Outside Hook
  • 10 points for beating an opponent with an inside hook
  • 15 Points for a double hook that beats a number of opponents or combination of both

6. Cone Pick Up

When the final game finishes.Have the players quickly take their balls back and dribble to every cone on the field and perform an Inside Hook and an Outside Hook, picking up a cone as they go, Once there are no cones left the players will dribble they’re balls to the coach or coaches assistant and place the balls in the bag and the cones in a pile.This will demonstrate a great level of respect and install responsibility to the children.After a few weeks you will find that the players will instantly seek out they’re ball after the game to be the quickest back to the coach with his/her ball and cones.
  • Have the balls placed all together just before the end game starts so it is easy for the players to collect at the end.
