CNN Hero And Football Changing Lives in Haiti

This is a story of a Hero and one of life’s true ambassadors for goodness and generosity. The story starts in 2006 when Patrice Millet was diagnosed with a rare bone Cancer in which his only option was a stem cell transplant or face death. Patrice Millet opted for treatment in the USA and after a 9 month fight for life he was finally in remission and was able to return to Haiti in 2007.

Millet decided that he was going to do everything and anything he could to help the children of Haiti after a devastating time in the country’s history and finally lead the life that he wanted instead of the one he felt he had to lead by giving Haiti’s youth a chance of a prosperous future.

“Every day you see so many kids in need, so many bad stories, tragic stories,” All my life, I wanted to do something good for my country, for the kids. I said, ‘This is the time. I have nothing to lose.’ “

Millet had a vision, a vision in the form of an organisation that would help people to improve themselves through soccer and not just as a player but more importantly as a human being and life skills to become successful, moral and upstanding members of the community. It is an Education by Sport but to get the education he had to find the funds to start his revolution and he did that by selling his construction company giving him the finance to start the FONDAPS Program or   Foundation Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours which means Foundation of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

“I want the kids to be very good citizens,” he said. “In soccer … you need to give, you need to receive, you need team spirit, discipline, sportsmanship. … It’s not all about soccer, it’s about life.”

One major obstacle he had to overcome was the fact that to achieve the goals he set out to achieve he had to go into the most dangerous slums in Haiti and promote his cause risking his life to make a difference as Haiti has a huge problem with gangs and gang related crime and murders. Over time Millet gained respect and trust from the slum communities giving him more access to make the changes and promotions he needed to sign children up to his programs.

FONDAPS have already proven to be survivors as they persevered through the Earthquake of 2010 which decimated the country and slowed down the operations of the organisation but didn’t stop Millet and his work as it has just drives him on further to help rebuild and make the FONDAP Program even bigger and to help more and more people in the region.

“When you live in the ghetto, you don’t see the world outside,” he said. “I try to bring hope for them, … to show them that (their) life is not only the reality.”

Soccer programs in Haiti were non existent before Millets program , and the only ones available were those kids had to pay for to register and to buy kits etc. , but with Millets FONDAP it gave every child an opportunity to participate without the pressure of finding financial help to do so as it is for free ,the kits, the tournaments and even the transport is paid for by Millet which allows all to have a chance of prosperity and to grow as human beings

“When they win, they are happy and they know that it’s because they worked hard for it. … That is the message I want to tell them,” said Millet. “Sometimes you win, sometime you lose. … But this is the way you win in life.”

Tent City

So far Millet has stopped hundreds of children from turning to a life of crime and from joining gangs by giving them an outlet to put their attention on instead of being seduced by criminals. When the earthquake hit, two of the three fields they used became tent Cities reducing the amount of space he had to provide the help which was needed but that hasn’t stopped his determination as he constantly helps with the children’s education by paying for it himself and offering hope to thousands. Some families have 10 family members living in small tents and without FUNDAP funding and food parcels they and many other families just would not survive.

“To see the joy in the face of a kid … and you know what he’s living (through) … that makes me happy,” he said. “It’s so wonderful to see the progress they make in soccer, in their own life, in everything.”

In 2009 Millets Cancer made a return which meant a return to the USA for a short time to get treatment but fortunately he made it and has plenty of big plans for the future.Millet plans and hopes to be able to create an athletic Leisure complex to secure a future for the Organisation and to continue to help the people of Haiti.

If you have only one passion in life – football – and you pursue it to the exclusion of everything else, it becomes very dangerous. When you stop doing this activity it is as though you are dying. The death of that activity is a death in itself.

A New Nation Is Born, The Story Of South Sudan And Using Football As A Tool For Hope

Football Bringing Hope To A New Nation

After years of brutal violence and war, the world finally has its newest nation and its newest addition to the Football world .South Sudan declared its independence from Khartoum in which they have  been battling since the 1950’s and within 1 day the country was already ready take on its first challenge as a brand new United Nations State , their very first football match. The South Sudanese never believed the day would come that they could be called an independent state after years of Civil war with the North in which it is estimated that around 2 million people have been killed and has completely decimated all structure and infrastructure in the region. The bitter feud has grown in the region between the predominantly Christian and Animist in the South and the Muslim North. Many people have questioned the decline of infrastructure in the region due to its enormous Oil wealth, but a divide that has caused so much death was always going to have a detrimental effect on the region, but what has broken them for so long can be fixed by the power of football and using sport as a driving force to bring hope to the new South Sudan.

“When you have 11 young men in national team shirts walk out onto the pitch, they are South Sudan. States tend to precede nations. The way to build a nation in the TV age is through sport, because sport provides the most-watched programs. In the past France and Germany could build a nation on the battlefield.”  – Author Simon Kuper

This is only the beginning for South Sudan and there are huge improvements and structural/Hierarchy additions to be made in order for the country to move forward. The newly formed SSFF have to create an efficient national network of leagues and clubs and to build new stadiums and training facilities in order to make sure they are able to educate and train officials for matches and coaching staff through Sports Science in order to fill the roles and the needs of the club.

“We are starting at zero. We have nothing in our hands, we are starting as God has created us,We won independence with the help of the international community. We were clear what goal we had, we knew the tactics of the enemy  -Benjamin Oliver

The next step for South Sudan and an important objective is to be recognised by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football. There have been many examples in history of using football as a national identity in order to gain political credibility and also to forge an identity within the United Nations.A perfect example of this is Palestine who are recognised by FIFA and not by the UN due to the belief that football created a unity in the region and are now the only independent region that is allowed to raise and fly the Palestine flag . Another example would be Iraq, a nation riddled with war and strife and has used football to unite the country and bring back a sense of hope and pride which eventually shone through in the 2007 Asia Games and the list can go on and on.

South Sudan and the SSFF know that the journey to bring stability to the country is going to be a long and arduous journey but one with huge gains. The SSFF wants to bring all 64 tribes together and deliver a network which brings sport to all the tribes creating communication links and access to a symbol ,a symbol of hope and perseverance a symbol of a united football nation. This idea of  networking the nation through integration into sport is already having a positive effect as 15,000 South Sudanese watched and cheered on the new team play with pride and waiving the new National flag which has been modelled on the Liberation movement flag. The new integration plan was also in full swing in the picking of the new national anthem which was chosen by using a system much like the X-Factor and the winning song called ” South Sudan Oyee” was written by students at the nations new capital and university Juba University.

We were all very emotional as it was the first time that our national team played, singing the national anthem – Makuac Teny, Minister for Sport

South Sudan has become a jewel in Africa’s crown and a positive model and example of modern innovation and human determination in which they are credited all over the world. Some have questioned sports role and ability in developing infrastructure in any developing country, but i think people forget that South Sudan is a brand new country and hope and pride which has been missing since the 50’s in the region will create a mental opportunity to grow and for the people to help themselves alongside the International community which will be instrumental in the stability of the region.Sport has a special way of growing economy, opportunity and national pride and now they have firmly placed themselves in the position to receive outside international investment in which their stadium was built and funded from Chinese investment who have strong intentions in the country and if there was ever a finer example , once again I refer back to Palestine and Iraq who used football for a power of good and reaped huge benefits, never underestimate the power of football

A national football team is the nation made flesh; it’s the visible manifestation of a nation,” said Simon Kuper, journalist and author of “Football Against the Enemy,”

Inspiring Story of Panyee FC In Thailand And The Power Of Football

I had heard of Panyee FC before and was aware that they overcame great adversity and poverty to achieve their goals but after I watched this awe-inspiring video I was truly moved and I think anyone and all children should be shown this video to highlight what true determination is and to inspire and motivate them.

The children showed incredible will to overcome the barriers of participation to sport and are a credit to Youth Sport, a perfect example that football has the power to change lives, communities and as a tool to bring hope is immeasurable.

Panyee FC are now famous around the world and are one of the best clubs in Thailand winning various trophies and honours, with top quality training facilities all floating on their river village community.

Wonder-goal Laser Beams Into The Goal ! Rare !

Rafael Porcellis plays in the Portuguese Second Division and while most of Europe’s top leagues are taking a break for the International fixtures, Rafael Porcellis certainly is not and is taking this opportunity to the fullest with this laser beam of a scissor kick smashing into the back of the net ! This kind of footage is rare and if a goal of this magnitude was scored in the Premier League, then people would be  talking about it for years and when Ronaldo or Messi does it they are elevated to astronomical levels ….. move over boys … take a bow Porcellis !
